Wembley Playgroup has had an exciting start to the year, with a series of projects and events that highlight the group’s commitment to inclusion, sustainability, connection and community-led fun.
The Intergenerational Open Day, themed ‘Mad Hatters and March Hares’. The event brought a “third generation” into the playgroup space, enriching the usual rhythm of craft, songs and imaginative play. Children delighted in meeting new friends, while seniors enjoyed the warmth and energy of being part of a lively community hub. The day reflected Playgroup WA’s vision for relationship‑rich environments where all ages feel valued and included.
National Volunteer Week coincided with the ‘Busy Bee and Family Open Day’. Thanks to support from the Town of Cambridge’s Volunteer Grant, the committee were able to recognise the dedicated volunteers who keep the playgroup thriving. The celebration strengthened the group’s sense of belonging and highlighted the essential role volunteers play in keeping community spaces welcoming and accessible. This time was also used to sand and oil playground equipment, paint the shed and clean all toys.
Wembley Playgroup has also taken meaningful steps toward becoming a more inclusive and accessible playgroup, supported by Playgroup WA’s Inclusion Program. The group was thrilled to be selected as a recipient of the Playgroup WA Inclusion Pack, which provided high‑quality sensory tools, visual supports and resources to help create calmer, more predictable play experiences for children who benefit from additional support.
Building on this momentum, the committee has introduced a dedicated Low Sensory Stimulation Session—a quieter, slower‑paced playgroup option designed for children who may feel overwhelmed in busy environments. This session features reduced noise, fewer transitions, soft lighting, and access to the new sensory resources, creating a welcoming space where children can explore at their own pace and families feel understood and supported.
Together, these projects reflect what makes Wembley Playgroup so special: a volunteer‑driven commitment to community connection, inclusion, safety sustainability and green spaces. With new gardens growing, new families joining and new inclusive practices taking root, Wembley continues to shine as a playgroup where every child and every family can belong.
